Lavabit is an email service founded in 2004 that spontaneously shut down in August of this year due to the US Government’s demands to hand over info from the service. Since the shutdown of Lavabit, users have not had access to their accounts or info until now.
The owner of Lavabit, Ladar Levison, stated that users will allow users to access their email archives and personal data beginning Thursday, October 17th. This enables users of Lavabit to preserve whatever data users have had stored in their Lavabit email by saving the data onto their hard drives.
The shutdown of Lavabit has a huge story because a man by name of Edward Snowden reportedly used a Lavabit email address on at least one ocassion. The government’s involvment and Snowden’s involvement in Lavabit is a big coincidence considering that Snowden is a large interest to the government and the NSA in particular.
No one knows if the government tried to access files from Lavabit because of Snowden, but it sure looks extremely suspicious that the government tried to do so. I think the government and the NSA needs to reevaluate themselves in order to truly stop what Snowden revealed. No blame should be put on Snowden for telling the truth, but rather, the government needs to put an end to their antics by evaluating themselves because of their creepy surveillance tactics that Edward Snowden leaked.
